Expanding Financial Aid

Student Success Improves As Financial Barriers Are Lifted

For many local residents, pursuing higher education can be challenging. The opportunity is often limited by significant and competing financial pressures. Scholarships remain among the most important ways for College of the Desert Foundation and its donors to encourage student success.

A gift to COD Foundation focused on financial needs for students will help increase unrestricted support for scholarships to qualified students seeking career/technical training, re-training or to pursue a degree or certificate.

Last year, more than 600 students received $550,000 of support for books, tuition, supplies and other expenses. Through these gifts, donors are helping students pursue their dreams of a college education. In addition to traditional scholarship awards, students often need other forms of financial assistance in order to attend and advance. The majority of College of the Desert students work full- or part-time while attending college.

While nearly all qualify for some form of financial assistance, traditional scholarship support rarely extends to other needs that can interrupt or stop students from completing their education galas – books, computers, transportation, textbooks, childcare and other critically needed support.

Scholarships

Nothing is more important to the mission of College of the Desert than to provide meaningful access to higher education. Scholarships relieve financial burden, making it easier for students to complete associate degrees and certificate. Your gift will help increase unrestricted support for scholarships to qualified students seeking a career/technical training, re-training or to pursue a degree or certificate.

Textbooks

Sticker shock is nothing new for college students, especially when it comes to the cost of purchasing their textbooks. In the last two decades, college textbook prices have increased at twice the rate of inflation.

The average cost of the top selling books in the COD bookstore in 2014 was $135.55. The cost of books for a full-time student for a year can be as high as $1000. This is the single greatest school-related cost students incur each semester – outstripping enrollment fees and tuition combined.

Affordable Childcare

The McCarthy Early Childhood Education Center at College of the Desert serves children of students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Students must be able to be confident that during their classroom hours that their children are in a safe, supportive environment. Hence, childcare assistance is essential. The McCarthy Center is open to children ages 0 to 5, offering a curriculum that prepares students for kindergarten and supports academic learning for the school-aged population.

The center is licensed and accredited and maintains a waiting list for enrollment. For students attending the COD East Valley Campus there is no access to on campus childcare. The lack of access to childcare can be a significant barrier to enrollment and completion. The College is seeking funds to develop a permanent or contracted service which will allow for access to affordable childcare for east valley students.

Access To Technology

Access to computers, printers, and the latest technology helps ensure that students can make timely progress on their research and course assignments. Many students do not have access to high tech equipment in the home. Your support will help ensure students have access to the latest tools and equipment needed to receive high quality training to meet local workforce demands.

Transportation

The high cost of transportation can be a significant barrier to enrollment and completion for many students. Funding is sought for bus waivers for students as well as to develop a shuttle service from Indio to Mecca Thermal to greatly enhance access and reduce transportation costs for students in the east valley.
