New observatory and telescope help students aim high in their education and career goals.

Charting Student Dreams by the Stars

The skies are unlimited for learning at College of the Desert’s East-Valley Campus in Mecca/Thermal. A new observatory and telescope will help students reach for the stars when it comes to their higher education and career goals.

Palm Desert resident Ivoj Kudrnac donated a state-of-the-art telescope and all it's supporting hardware and software to be housed in a new beta observatory site to be constructed at the Mecca/Thermal College of the Desert Campus.

Plans call for the Kudrnac Observatory to allow the telescope to be operational by mid-2017. The equipment will allow for remote operation and streaming live solar images to classrooms. Future facilities expansion will provide for large, configurable classroom/lab space for students to work on projects, control telescopes, and process data.

COD’s Math and Science Interim Dean Karen Tabor calls the observatory an incredible asset to the area. “This will expose science and astronomy to a section of the population that would not otherwise have ready access to these kinds of facilities,” said Tabor.
