Change a life

THE FUND: Student Emergency Fund

THE NEED: $100,000

THE WHY: The Student Emergency Fund provided a lifeline for students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students who lost their jobs turned to the College of the Desert Foundation for help with expenses such as groceries, rent, utilities and gas. With $200,000 allocated during the crisis, donations are needed to replenish the Fund and continue supporting students in need.

THE FUND: Fund for Student Success

THE NEED: $700,000

THE WHY: The Student Success Fund provides the Foundation the opportunity to respond to urgent needs on campus. For example, after the 2020 graduation ceremony was canceled due to the pandemic, the Foundation purchased regalia for every student to provide a sense of normalcy. THE FUND: EDGE/plEDGE, which guarantees two years’ free tuition for area high school graduates

THE NEED: $450,000

THE WHY: Most College of the Desert students are first generation college-goers and rely heavily on scholarships to pay their tuition, which is why the plEDGE program is such a success. Since 2017, almost 6,000 students have successfully completed plEDGE and many have gone on to complete their undergraduate degrees at four-year universities. Participants in this award-winning program are also required to enroll in EDGE, a summer bridge program to boost math and English skills, and complete community service hours to demonstrate their investment in the programs.
